CB - Vamos começar falando um pouco de vocês: quais são seus nomes e onde moram? Quantos anos têm, e quais os seus hobbies e o que fazem da vida?
Let's start talking a little about you... What are your names and where do you live? How old are you and what are your hobbies and occupations?

Tsubaki-chan - Meu nome de verdade é Katherine Lee; contudo, meu apelido é Tsubaki-chan, no que se refere aos meus cosplays. Vivo na Austrália, em New South Wales, Sydney, e tenho 20 anos. Estou no terceiro ano da faculdade e faço bacharelado em Artes Visuais com ênfase em Filme e Arte Digital. Cosplay é provavelmente meu hobby favorito, mas eu também amo desenhar, cozinhar, karaokê etc. Trabalho casualmente na Dress Fabrics, Curtaining, Manchester & Craft Store, que é como custeio meus cosplays (risos). Este é meu sexto ano fazendo cosplay e já fiz mais de 50 durante esse tempo, tendo ganho vários prêmios por eles na Austrália.
My real name is Katherine Lee, however I go by the alias ‘Tsubaki-chan’ when posting my cosplays. I live in Australia, New South Wales, Sydney & am 20-years-old. I’m currently in my 3rd year of university & I’m studying a Bachelor of Visual Arts, my major being Film & Digital Arts. Cosplay is probably my favourite hobby, but I also love drawing, cooking, karaoke, etc. I work casually in a Dress Fabrics, Curtaining, Manchester & Craft store, which is how I fund my cosplays. This is my 6th year cosplaying & I’ve made over 50 different costumes in that time & won numerous awards for them at the convention in Australia.

Cattypatra - Meu nome é Gabriella Lowgren, e meu apelido é Cattypara. Moro em Sydney, Austrália, e minha casa fica num subúrbio que é um buraco e não tem estação de trem. Tenho 16 anos, faço 17 no começo de novembro. Sou estudante do segundo ano e meus hobbies são: sair com amigos, cosplay, adorar a Tsubaki e esquiar todo fim-de-semana e tentar realizar "back flips" com resultado (risos). Este é o meu terceiro ano fazendo cosplay.
My name is Gabriella Lowgren, I go by the alias Cattypatra. I live in Sydney Australia, my house is in a suburb, which is a hole & has no train station. I’m currently 16-years-old & I turn 17 in early November. I’m currently a student in my second last year of high school & my hobbies include: Hanging out with friends, making cosplay, worshipping Tsubaki, & going skiing every weekend to race & to attempt to back flips off cliffs with varying results. This is currently my 3rd year cosplaying.

CB - Como os seus personagens para a seletiva do WCS foram escolhidos?
How was the character choice for the selective in WCS?

Tsubaki-chan e Cattypatra - Nós escolhemos estes personagens porque ambas amamos Fullmetal Alchemist. A série tem uma história muito bonita e personagens incríveis com os quais podemos trabalhar. Também decidimos quem faria quem, baseado em nossas personalidades. Por exemplo, Catty é a mais confiante e moleca de nós, o que vai bem com o Edward, enquanto a Tsubaki é mais passiva e terna, ficando perfeita para o Alphonse. Ed e Al são irmãos que são incrivelmente próximos, o que é parecido conosco: somos melhores amigas e não gostamos de forma alguma de ficar separadas. Na verdade, quase sempre fazemos personagens que combinam conosco de propósito; pelo menos para o WCS tem sido assim. Também quisemos personagens com os quais fôssemos nos divertir fazendo cosplay, pois queríamos passar por bons momentos juntas mesmo que não ganhássemos. No entanto, incrível e inesperadamente nós ganhamos! Gostamos de fazer cosplay pela diversão de curtir nossos personagens e suas respectivas séries.
We chose these characters because we both love Fullmetal Alchemist. The series has such a beautiful storyline & incredible characters for us to work & play with. We also decided who to do based on our personalities. For example Catty is the more confident & bratty of us, which very much suits Edward’s character & Tsubaki is the more passive & caring personality, so it was perfect for her to do Alphonse. Ed & Al are brothers who are amazingly close, which is similar to us, we’re best friends & don’t ever like being apart. We’ve actually quite unconsciously almost always doing characters who really match; at least for WCS we have been, both times we’ve done something very similar things costume-wise. We also wanted to do characters we’d have a lot of fun cosplaying because we wanted to have a good time as our characters & have lots of fun with each other in case we didn’t win, but amazingly & unexpectedly we did. We like cosplaying for the fun of enjoying our characters & their series.

CB - Falem um pouco sobre a confecção de seus cosplays. Qual foi a melhor parte? E a mais árdua?
Speak a little about the making of your cosplays. What was the best part? And what was the most arduous?

Tsubaki-chan - Essas fantasias foram incrivelmente difíceis. Sinceramente, eu nunca tinha feito nada dessa magnitude antes. A parte mais difícil provavelmente foi trabalhar com as escalas e proporções da armadura, já que eu a fiz bem maior que eu, de forma que Catty parecesse menor, e para que ficasse com o máximo de fidelidade às referências que achamos. A armadura é feita de vários tipos de espuma, o que tornou a movimentação fácil, então eu podia sentar, levantar, dançar etc. Trabalhei duro pra que ficasse o mais flexível possível, pois o Al se move em tantas posições diferentes, então quis tentar fazer justiça à armadura dele. A melhor parte do cosplay foi provavelmente montar a apresentação. Nós a organizamos antes mesmo de termos as fantasias prontas. Acho que fizemos um bom trabalho sincronizando nossas vozes com os personagens e fazendo algo que fizesse o máximo de justiça possível à série, englobando todos os temas principais da história de Fullmetal Alchemist.
These costumes were incredibly hard. I personally have never made something to this scale before. The hardest part was probably working with the huge scale & proportions as the armour I made to be much larger than myself to make Catty look shorter & to be as true to the references as we could be. The armour is made from various types of foam, which made it very easy to move, so I could sit down & stand up, dance, etc. I worked hard to make it as mobile as possible as Al can move into so many different positions I wanted to try & do his armour justice. The best part of the cosplay was probably the skit. We organised it even before we had the costumes ready. I think we did pretty well matching our voices to the characters & putting a short skit together that could do the series as much justice as we could, encompassing all the different themes & parts of the storyline that Fullmetal Alchemist has.

Cattypatra - Trabalhei muito duro na costura do cosplay, trabalhei muito duro em costurar minuciosamente os casacos e a calça. Por exemplo, em ambos eu tive que remover as linhas de costura desnecessárias para fazê-los o mais precisamente possível. Também me esforcei muito em ambas as calças, mesmo que não dê pra vê-las muito bem. Elas foram costuradas de forma bastante profissional e eu fiquei muito feliz que conseguimos um overloque emprestado para quase tudo nessas fantasias, o que foi extremamente necessário por conta da nossa escolha dos tecidos dos sobretudos e da forma como eles parecem nas imagens de referência. No começo, eu achava que fazer minha armadura do braço e da perna seria o mais difícil, mas me enganei. A costura, que imaginei primeiro ser bem fácil, acabou sendo o mais difícil. Definitivamente, a melhor parte desse cosplay, que foi escrita de forma fantástica, foi a apresentação.
I worked really hard on the sewing for the cosplay, I worked really hard on accurately the sewing coats & pants. For example, on both the coats I had to remove the unnecessary seam lines to make the coats as accurate as possible. I also put a lot of effort into both pairs of pants, even though you can’t see them very well, they were very professionally sewn & I was very happy we were able to borrow an overlocker for the majority of these costumes, which was extremely necessary for the fabric choice we made for the coats & for how they look in the references. I had originally thought making my auto-mail arm & leg would be the hardest part of the costume, but I was wrong, as the sewing part of the costume, which I originally thought would be very easy, turned out to be the most difficult. Definitely the best part of this cosplay, which was fantastically written, was probably the skit.

CB - Como foi a seletiva no evento em que participaram? Estavam confiantes?
How was the selective in the event in which you were classified? Were you confident?

Tsubaki-chan - Não tenho certeza se entendi essa pergunta direito, mas todo mundo que tentou o WCS na Austrália esse ano era excelente, e todos somos amigos. Com as duplas que vieram em segundo e terceiro, eu passei madrugadas conversando sobre nossas fantasias enquanto as fazíamos, mandando fotos do nosso progresso, almoçamos e já tínhamos ido juntos a eventos na Austrália antes. O WCS australiano teve uma atmosfera incrível de suporte e apoio. Todos tinham ótimas fantasias e apresentações. Nenhuma dupla podia ser considerada ruim. Foi algo bonito de se ver e creio que todos curtiram. Ninguém falou nada de mal sobre nós, nem discordou de nossa vitória ou questionou a decisão final dos juízes. Uma coisa legal no cenário cosplay australiano é que todos se apóiam, assim como nós estaremos torcendo pra cada dupla nos próximos anos. Por exemplo: um de nossos acessórios quebrou de alguma forma enquanto estávamos ensaiando antes da competição, e todos os demais concorrentes nos ajudaram a consertá-lo no último minuto, trazendo cola e durex, fazendo o melhor que podiam pra nos ajudar e resolver o problema antes da nossa apresentação. Foi um trabalho em equipe maravilhoso de todos que estavam competindo. Tenho tanto respeito pelos outros participantes! Nunca poderia me considerar melhor que algum deles; são um grupo de pessoas incríveis.
I’m not sure if I’ve understood this question properly, but everyone who entered this years Australian WCS competition were amazing & we’re all good friends with each other. The teams who came 2nd & 3rd I’d actually stay up late chatting to about our costumes whilst we were making them, sending progress photos to each other & we’ve gone to lunch & attended conventions in Australia together previously. The Australian WCS had an amazing supportive atmosphere. Everyone had amazing costumes & skits. There was no way any one of them could be considered bad. It was great to see & I think everyone enjoyed it. But no one has said anything bad about us winning nor disagreed or tried to question the judges’ final decision. Which a great thing in Australian cosplay, everyone is so supportive of each other, just like we will be cheering for every team for the following years to come. Another example, one of our props got broken somehow whilst we were marshalling before the competition & every other contestant helped us to fix it at the last minute, bringing us glue & tape, doing their best to try & help us fix the problem before we went on stage. It was amazing team work from everyone who was entering the competition. I have so much respect for all the other entrants. I could never ever consider myself any better than them; they are an amazing group of people.

Cattypatra - Devo dizer que o senso de camaradagem e apoio entre a comunidade cosplay australiana é incrível. Cada dupla nas seletivas do WCS foi ótima e todos eram amigos próximos antes da competição, ou viraram amigos durante ela. Todos estavam muito felizes pelos demais, e todos tivemos uma maravilhosa experiência juntos. Não há muito que eu possa acrescentar ao que a Tsubaki falou. Eu amo a Austrália!
I have absolutely no idea what that question meant, but I’m going to try & answer it anyway. XD I must say that sense camaraderie & support within the Australian cosplay community is amazing. Each team in the WCS finals were great & all of them were either our close friends before the convention or became friends during it. Everyone was so happy for each other & we all had an amazing experience together. Not much I can touch on that Tsubaki hasn’t already stated & everything she said is true. I love Australia!
